The University College of
Education of Winneba offers both undergraduate and
graduate study in physical education. The mission of UCEW is to prepare teachers and
other personnel for the school setting. The faculty in Physical Education at AEV in Ghana
are committed to excellence in teaching and coaching, service, sound academic advisement,
scholarship and research. Members of the faculty hold positions of leadership in national
and international organizations devoted to scholarly research and professional physical
education, and are themselves active teachers, coaches, performers and research scholars.
Preamble
The Programs in HPERS are designed to
acquaint students with research on physical education and sport; to enable students to
develop advanced sports skills; and to allow students to focus their studies on the
theoretical and performance areas (advanced) of their own choosing. The program covers a
range of courses, from the latest scientific information about teaching and learning to
the most current attitudes about sport competition and performance. The masters level
program provides opportunities for students to acquire investigative skills so as to
examine the teaching and learning process in a scientific manner.

The Programs in HPERS include studies
that lead to the award of
i) Three-Year Diploma Certificate
ii) Two-Year Coaching Certificate
iii) Bachelor of Education Degree
iv) Master of Philosophy Degree in Education
Types of Degrees Offered
The Three-Year Diploma Certificate students
are those who have met the entrance requirements and have been admitted into the
University for studies in HPERS
The Bachelor of Education Degree students
are of two types:
 | Type one includes those students who have
previously completed the program at the diploma level and have been readmitted into the
college for studies in HPERS as Post-Diploma students |
 | Type two are those students who have met
university entrance requirements and have been admitted to pursue the Four-Year Bachelor
of Education Degree |
 | The Two-Year Certificate students are those
who have met the prerequisites for admission into the coaching concentration

 | The Master of Philosophy students are those
who have completed the B.Ed. degree from UCEW or UCC and have demonstrated high level
competence as practitioners with a remarkable class at the BEd level
|
Study Tracks
 | All Three-Year Diploma students in the
department of HPERS may pursue physical education as a first subject and will cover a
sequence of course work for effective instruction at the senior secondary school level
(TRACK A), or the elementary and junior secondary levels (TRACK B).

 | All Two-Year Post Diploma students in the
department of HPERS may pursue physical education as a first subject and will cover a
sequence of course work for effective instruction at the senior secondary school level
(TRACK A), or for the primary and junior secondary schools, and the basic teacher training
level (TRACK B). |
Types of Students
 | A student admitted as a post-diploma
candidate may be classified as a "CONTINUING" student in physical education and
can pursue physical education as a first subject area. |
 | A student who has been admitted into UCEW as
a post-diploma candidate may be classified as a "NEW" student in physical
education and can pursue prescribed course in physical education as a second subject area
of study. |
 | The above classification implies that
post-diploma students who have been readmitted into the department with physical education
as a first subject area shall merely be "CONTINUING" further studies in physical
education and may also study a "NEW" subject area in another department.

 | A "CONTINUING" post-diploma
student who selects TRACK "A" for senior secondary further studies, must choose
a second subject area of study. A second subject area in physical education is classified
as a "NEW" student pursuing physical education from scratch.

 | A "CONTINUING" post-diploma
student who selects TRACK "B" for the primary, junior secondary schools, and the
basic teacher training studies, must complete the sequence of integrated subject studies
for effective functioning at the primary, junior secondary or training college levels. No
second subject area studies is required of TRACK "B" post-diploma students.

Course Codes & Numbers
The Courses at UCEW are classified by
levels to discriminate between introductory, intermediate, advanced, and upper division
courses. These levels describe the degree of difficulty of the course. Introductory
courses are designated by numbers between 100-199; Intermediate level courses range
between 200-299; Advanced level courses range between 300-399; While upper division
courses are designated by numbers ranging between 400-499.
